From 1978 to 1995 Defective Polybutylene Pipes were Widely Used on the Atlanta Plumbing Scene

January 11th, 2009 · No Comments

In the late 1970’s an inexpensive new type of plumbing pipe made of plastic polybutylene resin emerged as an extremely popular alternative to copper piping. Polybutylene pipes were not only very cheap to manufacture, but they were also easy to install. So Atlanta Plumbers used them in about 25% of the homes that were built over that 17 year period. And since the housing market in Atlanta really boomed during that time, every Atlanta Plumber was pretty busy installing pipes in new homes.

What all of those Atlanta Plumbers didn’t know was that they were installing what are now widely believed to be defective pipes.

Starting in the early 1980’s and continuing up through today, complaints have been pouring in about polybutylene pipes leaking and causing property damage. So a lot of the same Atlanta Plumbers who had been busy installing poly pipes are now busy replacing poly pipes.

Polybutylene Pipe ColorsThe polybutylene pipes used by Atlanta Plumbing professionals were mostly blue, grey, or black. The blue poly pipes were mainly used outside, buried under the yard to bring water from the supply up to the house. So if you locate your water meter and see blue plastic pipe leading away from it, you’ve probably got it.

For indoor plumbing, Atlanta Plumbers typically used the grey poly pipe. A good place to check for this is near your home’s water heater.

If you have polybutylene pipes in your home it is very likely that they will eventually leak. So to avoid flooding and property damage it’s a good idea to go ahead and replace them before that happens.
